Fishing lures are used by fishermen to attract fish in hopes to effectively catch it. There are myriad fishing lures available in the market today and each one varies in terms sizes, colors and designs. How does one choose the best fishing lure? Are there any lures as to how to pick them?

When picking out fishing lures, you must first determine what type of fish you want to catch. Using the appropriate fishing lures for the specific type of fish you’ll be catching will increase your chances of reeling them in.

If you are hoping to catch some salmon, choose a large fishing lure that somewhat resembles a trout. Salmon fishes are terribly territorial and they would surely be attracted to the lure as soon as they see it. For trout fishing, you should pick out smaller fishing lures. This will attract trout fishes the most since they tend to feed on tiny fishes and insects.

Now that you have narrowed down what kind of fish you want to capture, it is time to think about where you would be fishing and using the lures. The depth, current and clarity of the particular body of water you’ll be fishing in plays a great role in choosing the right fishing lures. For deep bodies of water with strong current, stick to heavier fishing lures so that it’ll reach the fishes faster. If you’ll be fishing in clear water, silver fishing lures are sufficient. For murkier waters, brightly colored lures are recommended since they will stand out better.

Don’t forget to match your fishing rod with your lures. Doing so will ensure that you will cast your lures efficiently without damaging your rod and reel.

People go fishing for different reasons. Some like the taste of freshly caught fish cooked over a fire right at the riverbank. Others don't eat the fish they catch, releasing it right back into the water. They fish only to break their daily routine and to enjoy a natural setting. Still others fish because they enjoy the company of their fellow fishers as they troll over the waters. Regardless of the reason why they fish, all of them need the right fishing lure if they want to get a bite.

There is no single lure that will work in all fishing situations. The right one depends on the kind of water, weather, time of year, and the species of fish you are after. For this reason, it is always a good idea to have different varieties of lures. Among the more common are:

Surface Lures. These lures remain on the surface and are useful when the water you are fishing in have a lot of weeds that might tangle your line. They are usually fun to use as you can enjoy the sight of fish jumping out of the water to take your lure.

Spoons. Looking like, well, spoons, these are made of sheet metal. They sink into the water and are thus perfect for luring fish in deeper waters. When retrieved, the lure wobbles attracting the fish. It pays to keep them bright and shiny enough to reflect sunlight as its glints are also attractive to fish.

Soft Baits. Made of rubber designed to look like worms or frogs, they have to be weighted to keep them in the water. They retreat slowly or jerkily when retrieved.

Spinners. These lures include a blade that rotates when dragged in the water. The rotating blades are designed to simulate the glint from the scales of a fish, thus attracting the attention of a bigger fish and making it think of the lure as food.

Jerk Baits. Unlike the spoons and spinners, jerk baits have no movement on their own. They need to be jerked to make them look like live fish that can be a potential meal for another, bigger fish.
